SDSS J163030.58+423305.8: A 40 minute Orbital Period Detached White Dwarf Binary
We report the discovery of a new detached, double white dwarf system with an
orbital period of 39.8 min. We targeted SDSS J163030.58+423305.8 (hereafter
J1630) as part of our radial velocity program to search for companions around
low-mass white dwarfs using the 6.5m MMT. We detect peak-to-peak radial
velocity variations of 576 km/s. The mass function and optical photometry rule
out main-sequence companions. In addition, no milli-second pulsar companions
are detected in radio observations. Thus the invisible companion is most likely
another white dwarf. Unlike the other 39 min binary SDSS J010657.39-100003.3,
follow-up high speed photometric observations of J1630 obtained at the McDonald
2.1m telescope do not show significant ellipsoidal variations, indicating a
higher primary mass and smaller radius. The absence of eclipses constrain the
inclination angle to <82deg. J1630 contains a pair of white dwarfs, 0.3 Msun
primary + >0.3 Msun invisible secondary, at a separation of >0.32 Rsun. The two
white dwarfs will merge in less than 31 Myr. Depending on the core composition
of the companion, the merger will form either a single core-He burning subdwarf
star or a rapidly rotating massive white dwarf. The gravitational wave strain
from J1630 is detectable by instruments like the Laser Interferometer Space

The Shortest Period Detached Binary White Dwarf System
We identify SDSS J010657.39-100003.3 (hereafter J0106-1000) as the shortest
period detached binary white dwarf (WD) system currently known. We targeted
J0106-1000 as part of our radial velocity program to search for companions
around known extremely low-mass (ELM, ~ 0.2 Msol) WDs using the 6.5m MMT. We
detect peak-to-peak radial velocity variations of 740 km/s with an orbital
period of 39.1 min. The mass function and optical photometry rule out a
main-sequence star companion. Follow-up high-speed photometric observations
obtained at the McDonald 2.1m telescope reveal ellipsoidal variations from the
distorted primary but no eclipses. This is the first example of a tidally
distorted WD. Modeling the lightcurve, we constrain the inclination angle of
the system to be 67 +- 13 deg. J0106-1000 contains a pair of WDs (0.17 Msol
primary + 0.43 Msol invisible secondary) at a separation of 0.32 Rsol. The two
WDs will merge in 37 Myr and most likely form a core He-burning single subdwarf
star. J0106-1000 is the shortest timescale merger system currently known. The
gravitational wave strain from J0106-1000 is at the detection limit of the
Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). However, accurate ephemeris and
orbital period measurements may enable LISA to detect J0106-1000 above the

Protein phosphatase 1-dependent bidirectional synaptic plasticity controls ischemic recovery in the adult brain
Protein kinases and phosphatases can alter the impact of excitotoxicity resulting from ischemia by concurrently modulating apoptotic/survival pathways. Here, we show that protein phosphatase 1 (PP1), known to constrain neuronal signaling and synaptic strength (Mansuy et al., 1998; Morishita et al., 2001), critically regulates neuroprotective pathways in the adult brain. When PP1 is inhibited pharmacologically or genetically, recovery from oxygen/glucose deprivation (OGD) in vitro, or ischemia in vivo is impaired. Furthermore, in vitro, inducing LTP shortly before OGD similarly impairs recovery, an effect that correlates with strong PP1 inhibition. Conversely, inducing LTD before OGD elicits full recovery by preserving PP1 activity, an effect that is abolished by PP1 inhibition. The mechanisms of action of PP1 appear to be coupled with several components of apoptotic pathways, in particular ERK1/2 (extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2) whose activation is increased by PP1 inhibition both in vitro and in vivo. Together, these results reveal that the mechanisms of recovery in the adult brain critically involve PP1, and highlight a novel physiological function for long-term potentiation and long-term depression in the control of brain damage and repair

A Dark Spot on a Massive White Dwarf
We present the serendipitous discovery of eclipse-like events around the
massive white dwarf SDSS J152934.98+292801.9 (hereafter J1529+2928). We
selected J1529+2928 for time-series photometry based on its spectroscopic
temperature and surface gravity, which place it near the ZZ Ceti instability
strip. Instead of pulsations, we detect photometric dips from this white dwarf
every 38 minutes. Follow-up optical spectroscopy observations with Gemini
reveal no significant radial velocity variations, ruling out stellar and brown
dwarf companions. A disintegrating planet around this white dwarf cannot
explain the observed light curves in different filters. Given the short period,
the source of the photometric dips must be a dark spot that comes into view
every 38 min due to the rotation of the white dwarf. Our optical spectroscopy
does not show any evidence of Zeeman splitting of the Balmer lines, limiting
the magnetic field strength to B<70 kG. Since up to 15% of white dwarfs display
kG magnetic fields, such eclipse-like events should be common around white
dwarfs. We discuss the potential implications of this discovery on transient
surveys targeting white dwarfs, like the K2 mission and the Large Synoptic

Radius constraints from high-speed photometry of 20 low-mass white dwarf binaries
We carry out high-speed photometry on 20 of the shortest-period, detached
white dwarf binaries known and discover systems with eclipses, ellipsoidal
variations (due to tidal deformations of the visible white dwarf), and Doppler
beaming. All of the binaries contain low-mass white dwarfs with orbital periods
less than 4 hr. Our observations identify the first eight tidally distorted
white dwarfs, four of which are reported for the first time here, which we use
to put empirical constraints on the mass-radius relationship for extremely
low-mass (<0.30 Msun) white dwarfs. We also detect Doppler beaming in several
of these binaries, which confirms the high-amplitude radial-velocity
variability. All of these systems are strong sources of gravitational
radiation, and long-term monitoring of those that display ellipsoidal
variations can be used to detect spin-up of the tidal bulge due to orbital

Symptomatic hypogammaglobulinemia in infancy and childhood – clinical outcome and in vitro immune responses
BACKGROUND: Symptomatic hypogammaglobulinemia in infancy and childhood (SHIC), may be an early manifestation of a primary immunodeficiency or a maturational delay in the normal production of immunoglobulins (Ig). We aimed to evaluate the natural course of SHIC and correlate in vitro lymphoproliferative and secretory responses with recovery of immunoglobulin values and clinical resolution. METHODS: Children, older than 1 year of age, referred to our specialist clinic because of recurrent infections and serum immunoglobulin (Ig) levels 2 SD below the mean for age, were followed for a period of 8 years. Patient with any known familial, clinical or laboratory evidence of cellular immunodeficiency or other immunodeficiency syndromes were excluded from this cohort. Evaluation at 6- to 12-months intervals continued up to 1 year after resolution of symptoms. In a subgroup of patients, in vitro lymphocyte proliferation and Ig secretion in response to mitogens was performed. RESULTS: 32 children, 24 (75%) males, 8 (25%) females, mean age 3.4 years fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Clinical presentation: ENT infections 69%, respiratory 81%, diarrhea 12.5%. During follow-up, 17 (53%) normalized serum Ig levels and were diagnosed as transient hypogammaglobulinemia of infancy (THGI). THGI patients did not differ clinically or demographically from non-transient patients, both having a benign clinical outcome. In vitro Ig secretory responses, were lower in hypogammaglobulinemic, compared to normal children and did not normalize concomitantly with serum Ig's in THGI patients. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of children with SHIC in the first decade of life have THGI. Resolution of symptoms as well as normalization of Ig values may be delayed, but overall the clinical outcome is good and the clinical course benign
Spectral modeling of gaseous metal disks around DAZ white dwarfs
We report on our attempt for the first non-LTE modeling of gaseous metal
disks around single DAZ white dwarfs recently discovered by Gaensicke et al.
and thought to originate from a disrupted asteroid. We assume a Keplerian
rotating viscous disk ring composed of calcium and hydrogen and compute the
detailed vertical structure and emergent spectrum. We find that the observed
infrared CaII emission triplet can be modeled with a hydrogen-deficient gas
ring located at R=1.2 R_sun, inside of the tidal disruption radius, with Teff
about 6000 K and a low surface mass density of about 0.3 g/cm**2. A disk having
this density and reaching from the central white dwarf out to R=1.2 R_sun would
have a total mass of 7 10**21 g, corresponding to an asteroid with about 160 km

Absorb bioresorbable vascular scaffold: What have we learned after 5 years of clinical experience?
Bioresorbable scaffolds have the potential to introduce a paradigm shift in interventional cardiology, a true anatomical and functional "vascular restoration" instead of an artificial stiff tube encased by persistent metallic foreign body. Early clinical studies using the first commercially available drug-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) reported very promising safety and efficacy outcomes, comparable to best-in-class second-generation drug-eluting metal stent. To date, more than 60,000 Absorb BVSs have been implanted with only the interim analysis of one randomized trial (ABSORB II RCT) available. Recent registries have challenged the initial claim that BVS is immune from Scaffold Thrombosis (ST). However, suboptimal device expansion and insufficient intracoronary imaging guidance can explain higher than expected ST, especially in complex lesions. The aim of this review article is to critically evaluate the results of the available Absorb BVS studies and discuss the lessons learned to optimize lesion selection and implantation technique of such devices
